“Every day is a great day for hockey.”: Mario Lemieux

Welcome Back!

After a busy September and October, the 2017-2018 season is officially underway. The players are getting to know each other, making new friends, reconnecting with old friends and increasing their love of the sport of hockey.

As we start the season, we are going to shine a spotlight on the SPMHA’s youngest players in Discovery, Initiation and Novice.

Discovery and Initiation: Message from Elton Davidge, Discovery/Initiation Director

Registration has increased in the Discovery/Initiation divisions! We currently have 51 Discovery Registrants, who are divided into two teams.  In Initiation 1, we have 125 players and we have 135 players in Initiation 2.

There have been some exciting changes in the Initiation division.  We have launched the Hockey Canada Cross-Ice Initiative has been launched.  For more information, please go to: https://www.hockeycanada.ca/en-ca/hockey-programs/coaching/initiation/cross-ice-hockey.

Grading has been introduced to Initiation. The goal of grading is to ensure parity among the teams.  So far, the response has been positive.  Also, age appropriate equipment has been provided, through the Broadmoor Arena, to our registrants.

As always, the focus for the 2017-2018 season will be on long-term player development and creating a lifelong love for the sport.

Novice Division:  Message from Jeremy Pope, Novice Director

September was a busy month for the Sherwood Park Minor Hockey Association’s Novice group as 257 children skated their way through an intense evaluation day and two exhibition games. Once the snow cleared, the SPMHA had 16 teams spread through five different tiers.  There are three Tier 1 teams, three Tier 2 teams, four Tier 3 teams, three Tier 4 teams and three Tier 5 teams.

Of our kids, 146 are brand new to the Novice Division this year. They all seem to be very excited to be a part of their new teams. Each team already has a few practices under their belts and even got a couple league games in too.

We look forward to a year full of growth and development as players and, most importantly, as human beings.  Best of luck to all the teams for the rest of 2017 and into 2018!
